A man who was once one of the most powerful lawmakers in New York State appears headed for jail after being found guilty of corruption for a second time.

A jury May 11 found former Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver guilty after his first conviction in 2015 was thrown out under a supreme court ruling that changed legal boundaries for public corruption.  He had been charged with mail fraud, wire fraud and extortion.

Under his first conviction, Silver was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

The 74 year old Democrat was accused of illegally earning four-million dollars from parties that had business with New York State, including a real estate developer and Cancer research company.

His lawyers said the legal fee money Silver collected was perfectly legal.

26 witnesses testified but, as with the first trial, Silver did not take the stand.

The career politician was first elected in 1976 and, along with the governor and Senate leader was one of the infamous “three men in a room” that every year conducts closed-door negotiations on the state budget to be placed before legislators for a vote.
