Former Binghamton Goaltender Leads Edmonton’s Return to NHL Play

Former Binghamton goaltender Ken Holland leads the NHL's Edmonton Oilers back into action as they prepare to resume the season that was suspended on March 12.  Edmonton meets the Chicago Blackhawks in a playoff game at a time and place to be determined.  It could be in Edmonton.  The Oilers who are members of the Western Conference's Pacific Division would be a 5th seed while the Blackhawks would be a 12th seed.  Edmonton has made a bid to be a hub when play resumes with workouts and skating to begin sometime in June.

Holland is the President of Hockey Operations and General Manager of the Oilers.  He came to Edmonton in May of 2019 after being associated with the Detroit Red Wings for 36 years. He played as a goaltender in the Detroit organization, scouted and served as a long-time general manager for the Red Wings. He was the Red Wings' Director of Amateur Scouting for seven seasons.  The Red Wings won one Stanley Cup when Holland was the Assistant General Manager and three when he served as the team's General Manager.

Ken's goaltending career spanned a stretch of six seasons  in Binghamton.  He started in the 1976-77 season with the Broome Dusters in the North American Hockey League then played one American Hockey League season with the Dusters plus three seasons with the Binghamton Whalers. Holland's best season in Binghamton was the 1981-82 season when he led the Whalers to the Calder Cup Finals where they fell to the New Brunswick Hawks.  Holland played in 46 regular season games and turned in a goals against average of 2.92.  He shook off a knee injury and appeared in 15 playoff games.
