Firefighters Extinguish Blazes Near Binghamton Railroad Tracks
At least two fires have been reported in recent days around railroad tracks passing through downtown Binghamton.
The latest blaze broke out Tuesday afternoon under Norfolk Southern tracks near Water and Rolison streets.
The fire erupted under the railroad bridge that crosses Water Street. Flames spread, igniting clothing, wood and nearby brush.
The blaze scorched the side of the bridge directly under the tracks where several freight cars were parked.
The fire was extinguished after a few minutes and no injuries were reported.
A fire official said it was the second blaze under the railroad tracks near Water Street this week.
City fire investigators were not immediately available to discuss whether the incidents appeared to be accidental in nature.
The area around the railroad bridge often is used by unsheltered people. Police officers and firefighters found no one at the scene of Tuesday's fire.
