An abandoned industrial building in the town of Kirkwood is to be torn down to make way for a FedEx Ground distribution center.

According to the Press & Sun-Bulletin and WBNG, the town planning board has given the go-ahead for the project on Industrial Park Drive.

Plans call for the demolition of a complex that had been most recently used by L3 Technologies.

The new distribution facility would be housed in a 458,000-square-foot building.

Town supervisor Lewis Grubham said the project is "wonderful for Kirkwood." He said there had been some concerns about possible drainage issues but they've been addressed.

Grubham said planning for the project is "99 percent completed." He said he believes demolition work could get underway before the end of winter.

The FedEx Ground distribution center is to be located a short distance from the site of a FedEx Freight trucking terminal in Kirkwood. That facility was closed four years ago when a new terminal was opened in the town of Nichols in Tioga County.
