Volunteer fire companies around the region may get a little break if showers and thunderstorms predicted for the next couple of days materialize.

May 2, several brush fires were reported in the Southern Tier.  One blaze on Pendell Hill Road in the Town of Nanticoke that was reported a little before 4 p.m. is blamed on electrical wires rubbing against trees, sparking the very dry brush and grass to catch fire.  There have been no reports of injuries.

The Pendell Hill Road fire drew firefighters from Nanticoke, Glen Aubrey, the Town of Lisle, Town of Maine and Chenango Bridge.  The New York State Forest Rangers also responded.

Late in the morning May 2, the National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning for the entire region that continued into the night due to very dry conditions, gusty wind and low humidity.

New York State has a ban on open burning until at least May 14 and burning garbage outside is never allowed in New York.  In addition, several municipalities and counties have their own regulations concerning outdoor burning.

In what may be considered another seasonal fire danger, fire heavily damaged a garage on Odell Avenue in Endicott that is being blamed on an overheated electric lawn mower which had been rolled into the structure.

A vehicle inside the garage was also damaged in the blaze shortly after 5:30 p.m. May 2.

Firefighters from Endicott, Endwell, Vestal and West Corners were all called to the scene.

The fire was reported out in less than a half hour.
