The eight-foot-tall bronze statue has stood for decades along East Main Street just west of Union-Endicott High School.

Village mayor John Bertoni says there have been preliminary conversations about relocating the statue to a spot near the entrance of the George F. Johnson Memorial Library.

The library is on Park Street, one block north of where the statue currently stands.

Bertoni says he's discussed the concept of moving the statue with Sandra Scanlon, George F. Johnson's granddaughter. He says she has indicated support for the idea.

The mayor says he's also talked about the possible move with Union-Endicott school superintendent Suzanne McLeod.

Bertoni says the school district owns the land where the Johnson statue is located. The statue site is between the high school and the district's administrative office building.

The mayor says if the Johnson statue ultimately is moved to the library grounds, the school district could use the space for additional parking.
