Eminem Returns With Empowering New Song ‘Phenomenal’
Marshall Mathers has long been a fighter and shown the resiliency of a true warrior. The spellbinding lyricist pushes that point home with his latest release, "Phenomenal."
After teasing the track in the trailer for the new boxing movie Southpaw and in a recent Beats by Dre commercial, Eminem debuts the intense cut, giving fans an unexpected treat for their listening pleasure. Produced by DJ Khalil, "Phenomenal" features a rock-inspired soundbed that is powered by rollicking drums and electric guitar riffs. The song gives the feeling of being against the wall, which Southpaw -- the movie which inspired the song -- is meant to convey.
Eminem attacks the beat with a terse ferocity from the onset, delivering a barrage of bars and is relentless in doing so. "Let me self-empower you / When you're down and they're trying to clown the f--- out of you / When you feel like you're running out of fuel / I'll show you how to use doubt as fuel / Convert it to gunpowder too," he rhymes. Em proves that although he is far from the fresh-faced spit-kicker that shocked the world in the late '90s, he is still more than capable of slaughtering a track.
Co-written by longtime Eminem collaborator Luis Resto and his brother, Mario Resto, "Phenomenal" will live on the soundtrack to Southpaw, which Em executive produced and will be released via Shady Records. Purchase the single on iTunes here.
The film, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, 50 Cent, Rita Ora and Forest Whitaker, hits theaters July 24.
