Elderly Otego Man Unable to Call For Help While House Burns Down
New York State Police say a passerby was able to summon help for an elderly Otego man as his home burned to the ground.
Authorities say they were called to a fire on County Road 5 in the Town of Otego at 1:09 a.m. February 11 by a Good Samaritan who spotted a 76-year-old man standing outside the home. Troopers say the resident did not have a way to call for help before the person passing by called 9-1-1.
The resident was taken to A.O. Fox Hospital for treatment for exposure to the cold weather.
Authorities say the man’s house was completely destroyed by the fire.
Firefighters from Otego, Wells Bridge, and West Oneonta responded to the blaze.
The Otego Fire Department and county fire investigators are working to determine a cause of the fire.
