Drab Downtown Binghamton Building Comes Alive with 5-Story Mural

A Canadian artist and her mother are busy transforming the plain wall above a Binghamton bar as they paint a massive mural.

Danae Brissonnet of Quebec has spent several days perched working on the public art project on the south side of the State Street building that houses the Rathskeller pub.

The 30-year-old Brissonnet is being assisted in the undertaking by her mom, Daphne, who said her daughter has always been interested in drawing.

The carousel-inspired mural is receiving support from the Upstate Revitalization Initiative and the Greater Binghamton Fund.

Danae Brissonnet said she expects the Binghamton project will be completed in less than two weeks.

The massive mural is being painted on what had previously been an unremarkable brick-colored wall adjacent to the former Binghamton Municipal Building. That structure had served for decades as City Hall. It recently was transformed into a 50-unit apartment complex.

Brissonnet said "it's always exciting" to create a mural the size of the downtown project.
