Gyms across New York State, including gyms here in the Binghamton area, have been closed since the middle of March when the COVID-19 pandemic began. They could be reopening soon.

According to WGRZ, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on his Friday conference call that gyms across the state will receive reopening information on Monday.

I have many friends that belong to gyms in the Binghamton area including Planet Fitness, The Riverwalk Athletics Club, and American Family Fitness Center on the Vestal Parkway. All of them are excited and looking forward to getting back to the gym.

Since the coronavirus outbreak, many people with memberships to gyms have been forced to try and find other alternatives for their workouts. Many have turned to purchasing bicycles. So much so that it has lead to an inventory shortage at local bike shops. Others have purchased their own weights and gym equipment, while others have simply been jogging and running through their neighborhoods.

As the Southern Tier of New York entered into phase four of reopening, many people thought the gyms would be one of the businesses that were allowed to reopen, but Governor Cuomo ordered them to remain closed. More than a month ago, Broome County Executive Jason Garnar held one of his coronavirus press conferences at The Gaslamp Gym on Court Street in Binghamton and asked Governor Cuomo to allow gyms to reopen. Gaslamp Gym has since started offering online workout classes like many other gyms around the country have.

Gyms weren't the only businesses to receive good news on Friday's conference call, Cuomo also mentioned that bowling alleys will be receiving they're reopening guidance next week as well.
