Meanwhile, New York State Senator Fred Akshar sat down with 120 local students from schools throughout Broome, Chenango, Delaware and Tioga Counties for a School Safety Summit discussion on March 23.

In a statement from his office, the Binghamton Republican said he was moved and inspired by the young people’s participation in the conversation.

According to the statement, many students expressed support for more school resource officers but were uncomfortable with guns of any kind on school grounds, an apparent reference to President Donald Trump’s proposal to arm some “qualified” teachers.  Akshar’s office says another focus of the discussion was on better mental health services in and out of school.
