Thousands of customers served by the Endicott water system may notice discoloration of their water in the aftermath of firefighting operations.

The village water department issued an advisory Wednesday afternoon indicating the problem was linked to an early-morning blaze on Route 38B.

Union Center firefighters obtained water from a hydrant at Route 26 and Payne Road to fill tankers that went to the scene. That stirred up minerals including iron and manganese, resulting in discolored water.

Customers from Glendale Drive to the Boswell Hill Road area extending north to Payne Road may experience discoloration for a time.

Affected customers are advised to run their water for about ten minutes. The issue could continue through Thursday morning.
