Insinga says a woman contacted her to tell her about a firefighter who saved one dog from a house fire by improvising a way to give the Labrador oxygen using equipment designed to fit a human face.  Sidney EMS training coordinator Dustin Miller said there are special masks that go over the snout of a dog or cat to administer the right flow of oxygen that are much more effective.  The Labrador survived but another dog perished in the fire.

Erin said when she found out about pet oxygen masked, she wanted to spread the word. She says many people stepped forward to buy the masks at around $90 a kit for three masks, paperwork and other equipment to donate to fire and ambulance companies but so many companies still do not have the special masks.

Broome County Emergency Services officials say they believe at least some companies have the special equipment but it is not standard issue.  Most companies and individual EMTs said they would welcome donations of the special masks.

The masks can be ordered through www.petoxygenmasks.org.

The site includes a section where a purchaser can designate where the equipment will go.

Erin also talked about the joys and challenges facing the Delaware Valley Humane Society and the best way people can go about finding a perfect pet match through any shelter or adoption group.

Special attention is being focused on our little rock-star "Tootsie:, who has been at the DVHS for four years!  This lovely, mixed-breed girl has only been harder to place since, like most of us, has her own likes and dislikes.  Tootsie would be a great companion in a home without other animals or fearful children.  She is so special, her adoption has been sponsored to help her find a good home!

For more information about Tootsie, helping at the shelter, adopting a pet or pet care advice, contact the Delaware Valley Humane Society at (607) 563-7780, online at www.dvhsny.org and on facebook.

Southern Tier Close Up is heard Sunday at 6 am on Kiss 104.1.
