Hundreds of tons of discarded plastics and cardboard remain at the site of a Tioga County recycling facility wrecked by a fast-moving blaze.

Seven days after the fire tore through the Taylor Garbage Service plant on Route 434 in the town of Owego, hot spots remained in huge mounds of debris at the site.

No serious injuries were reported as a result of the January 3 blaze in the 30,000-square-foot facility.

Investigators have not been able to determine the cause of the fire, although Taylor Garbage Service issued a statement indicating it may have been "started by a cell phone battery."

Company officials have not returned phone calls seeking comment on the blaze or plans for the Apalachin site.

Monday's statement from Taylor Garbage Service said: "We are in the initial process of getting ready for demolition of the existing structures and will be rebuilding the recycling facility.
