The entire region continues to shiver under potentially dangerous wind chills.

A Wind Chill Advisory was issued until noon December 28 for the Twin Tiers while Chenango, Delaware and Otsego Counties were under a wind chill warning with 25 to 35 below zero wind chills until noon.

People should limit time outdoors since the cold weather could cause frost bite in less than a half hour as well as hypothermia.  If they must go out, residents are advised to dress in layers and cover all exposed skin, including wearing hats, gloves or mittens and covering the face with a scarf.

Pets can also suffer frost bite and other consequences of bitterly cold temperatures.

If possible, cats and dogs should be kept inside or at least in a warmer area like a garage and should be checked frequently for frost bite.

Owners should also make sure pets don’t have salt imbedded between their toes.

Short-haired dogs like Chihuahuas, dachshunds, greyhounds, whippets and Italian Greyhounds should all wear coats before being let outside and their time out also limited.
