COVID Positivity Rate Increases Slow in Twin Tiers

Positivity rates for the latest surge of the coronavirus appear to be stabilizing and even receding in New York and Pennsylvania.

Broome County, which had been seeing triple-digit additions to COVID cases for the past couple of weeks added 75 cases in the January 21 report. Broome County reports the total number of cases is at 11,682 The number of deaths, however increased by six. County Executive Jason Garnar says two women in their 60s and 90s and three men in their 70s and 80s passed away, bringing Broome’s death toll to 229.

Hospitalizations are also down slightly.

Cortland County only reported 13 new cases January 21 for a total of 3,139 but added one death for a total of 59.

Delaware’s cases increased by 31 to 1,154 and two more residents passed away, bringing the death toll to 32.

Tioga County added 41 cases from the January 23 report for a total of 2,408 and no additional deaths. The death toll in Tioga has been at 64 since early December.

Chenango County reported a large increase but the 105 new cases reported was from the last update on January 22. Chenango County now has 1,926 cases. There were no new deaths, keeping the toll at 35.

New York had listed more than 4,800 dead from COVID-19 in the past 30 days but in the past several days the number of new infections and hospitalizations have flattened.

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf says for the second straight week, the infection rates are lower than the previous week.

Bradford County reported 180 new cases over the past week while it had 204 new cases the previous week. Susquehanna had 112 new cases, steady from the 113 new cases reported the prior week and Wayne County added 121 cases for the week. Last week, cases increased by 189.
