A jump in the number of positive tests for COVID-19 is being recorded in New York State and a spike in one Broome County school district is putting students back to where they were a year ago: at home.

Some local Health Departments had the day off from reporting COVID-19 numbers for the Veterans' Day holiday but Chenango County says it passed the 5,000 case mark in an update it posted November 11.  There were no additional fatalities but there were 32 new cases.  Chenango County says 33 percent of its COVID cases are in people who have been vaccinated.

New York State, which had been averaging daily new cases in the three- and four-thousands November 11 reported 6,545 new cases.

Meanwhile, jump in positive tests for COVID-19 in the Harpursville Central School District is forcing students back to remote learning for two weeks.  Superintendent Michael Rullo on November 9 informed families that due to the number of cases and shortage of staff, the decision was made for all on-campus students in grades pre-kindergarten through 12 to begin remote instruction through November 23.

Rullo says its hoped regular classes will resume after the Thanksgiving break.  In the statement, the Superintendent says, “I know we were all hoping that these situations would be behind us this year, but, unfortunately, we are forced to make this decision in the best interest of everyone’s health and safety.” 

Special Education students with off-campus locations are still attending those program with Harpursville district transportation.

The district is providing one day of food pickup per student Monday daily through Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the elementary school loading dock.
