New York Governor Kathy Hochul has announced the launch of an initiative to expand and create high quality child care centers across the State University of New York System campuses for students and faculty.

Binghamton University, SUNY Broome Community College, SUNY Cortland, SUNY Oneonta and Tompkins Cortland Community College are among the campuses on the list in line to share $4.5 million in federal and state funding to support current centers, a program to train the next generation of child care professionals and the development of a long-term plan to address lack of child care in certain areas of the state.

An estimated 1,200 student parents utilized 46 on-site child care centers on SUNY campuses along with faculty, staff and state employees with children needing day care.

The Governor’s office says 18 more centers are currently needed to fully cover all 64 SUNY campuses.
