A problem with a natural gas line caused the closure of the Broome County Department of Social Services building in Binghamton.

New York State Electric and Gas alerted -Binghamton Fire Department after people in the building at 36 Main Street reported smelling an odor associated with gas early Monday morning.

The building - which is across the street from Binghamton High School - was evacuated.

The county announced the building would be closed for the day shortly before 9:30 a.m. Many people who had appointments or were seeking emergency assistance did not hear about the closure. They were surprised when they showed up at the offices that they would have to return for assistance.

Early Monday afternoon, the county announced that repairs had been completed and heat was restored to the building so operations would return to normal on Tuesday.
