Broome County Sheriff Prepares to Reopen Pistol Permit Office
The identification and pistol permit operations at the Broome County Sheriff's Office will resume operations soon.
Sheriff David Harder said the unit was shut down on January 7 because of concerns related to the Covid-19 pandemic.
When word spread that the office was going to be closed until further notice, Harder said "people came roaring in" to try to submit their applications. He said some people took time off from work to get to the office before operations were suspended.
The sheriff said the office will re-open next Monday. For the safety of employees and the public, all business will be conducted by appointment only.
Appointments must be made for fingerprinting, identification cards and pistol permits. Those who don't have an appointment will be turned away at the door.
Appointments may be made by calling (607) 778-2924. Most of the available slots for Monday were already filled by Wednesday afternoon.
