Officials say since the report of 12 overdose deaths in March, a team was formed to develop strategies to combat future spikes which include stepped up education and information shared on local media through public service announcements and posts on social media.

The Broome County Office of Emergency Services has coordinated the county’s multi-departmental response, including monitoring, meetings and communications.

The team has also turned a focus on harm reduction and intervention using peer counselors and the drug court team while police are moving to treat overdose scenes as crime scenes while additional police resources have been provided to the State and Local police to look for drugged drivers and those transporting narcotics through the area.
