Broome Health Dept. and Schools Issue Corona Statements

The Broome County Health Department issued a new statement March 4 on the coronavirus situation saying local officials are “monitoring COVID-19 closely” and are aware of the concerns in the community about the spread of the relatively new virus.  There are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Broome County.

Many area school districts are also reacting to the developments in the spread of the novel coronavirus, sending letters to parents and guardians. 

The notices over the past week from schools like Susquehanna Valley and Vestal repeat what county health department officials are saying: the situation is being closely monitored and guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other health officials is being followed.

The districts inform parents that they have infectious disease protocols in place and steps are being taken such as cleaning and disinfecting throughout the schools to minimize the spread of viruses.

Everyone is reminded to wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and if soap and water are not available to use hand-sanitizers, avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth and stay home if you are sick.

While there have been no cases of coronavirus reported locally, Binghamton University says it is experiencing a surge in cases of influenza and say students and instructors are put at risk when sick students choose to attend class when they are ill.
