After the county posted an increase in cases of over 100 in one day going into the weekend, Broome October 5 said there were 29 new cases October 4 for a total of1,863 since the start of the pandemic and 413 active cases right now.

That still compares to numbers in mid-September when there were two to seven new cases reported in daily updates.

Broome County Executive Jason Garnar said he expected the count for October 5 to jump up again over 50 once the final numbers were tallied.  The Democrat says with the increased and rapid testing, the number of positive results for the coronavirus is likely to fluctuate for a while.

Broome County health officials say while most of the new cases recently have been reported in the City of Binghamton, specifically on the West side, there are now cases starting to be reported spreading out from that cluster in what director Rebecca Kauffman describes as “a spiderweb”.

Increased numbers are being reported in areas like Johnson City and Vestal.

Broome County Executive Jason Garnar, while not issuing an actual order, is urging residents to stay home if possible in order to get a handle on the outbreak.

Chenango and Cortland Counties each reported eight new cases of COVID-19 in the October 5 briefing. Delaware and Tioga Counties each reported two new cases during the daily update.
