Broome County has gotten 1,170 doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine this week and is taking appointments for residents age 60 and over with some pre-existing conditions and essential workers in the state identified priority groups for clinics at the SUNY Broome Ice Rink next week.

Residents in the expanded essential worker group are to be vaccinated during appointments that will start March 15 and those age 60 and older with comorbidities vaccination are to start March 16.

County vaccination information is available at www.gobroomecounty.com. 

The area also got 300 vaccine doses to be administered by at-home care providers to those patients.  Meanwhile, Broome Office for Aging and Rite Aid Pharmacies will hold a clinic for residents age 65 and older Friday, March 12 at the Broome West Senior Center.

If additional doses become available or the state changes the regulations regarding what groups can be vaccinated by what agencies, Broome Health officials say, they will issue updated news advisories.

Meanwhile, Broome County is backing away from its testing efforts.

Broome County Executive Jason Garnar says this will be the last week for the mobile rapid testing unit, which began operating out of a converted B.C. Transit bus in October and has conducted some 13,500 rapid COVID tests.

Government staff that has working the testing site and some of the contact tracers are being returned to their regular county government departments or are being relocated to do support work at the county vaccination site at the SUNY Broome Ice Rink.  The final rapid COVID test will be done at the mobile unit at the Health Department location on Front Street this Friday. March 12.
