The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has approved a four-point-one million dollar award to identify and remove lead in over 160 older homes in the county.

The Broome County Health Department Environmental health division says much of the material, that can lead to learning and growth issues in children, is found in paint in older homes.

U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillbrand announced the awards December 13.  Syracuse, Utica and other communities with older housing stock in New York State were also awarded lead identification and abatement money.

Information on the impacts of exposure to lead, how to have levels checked and what to do about it can be found by contacting the Broome County Health Department at (607) 778-2847 or your local health department.
