Broome County Business Sign Offends Some Residents
A sign posted outside a Broome County tavern is creating a bit of controversy.
The message on a board in front of Davy's Last Chance Saloon on Route 12 in Chenango Forks reads: "LIBERAL DEM UN-AMERICAN PIECES OF S---!"
Business owner Davy Dutcher said he posted the sign Monday afternoon. He said: "My customers love it."
But Margaret Dodson-Buhl, a nearby resident, wasn't pleased when she spotted the message Tuesday morning.
Dodson-Buhl, a retired schoolteacher, said "this is really offensive." She said she wanted to go into the tavern to complain but her husband discouraged her from doing so.
She called Davy's and complained to an employee about the sign. She also contacted the Broome County Sheriff's Office and was advised the business can put up any message.
Sheriff David Harder said, based on court rulings, he believes that's the case.
Dutcher said he's received a few complaints but "not many." He said most of the people who don't like the sign are "liberal schoolteachers and union people."
Dutcher said he's owned the business for over 40 years. He said he plans to leave the message in place for a few days "until I figure out something more offensive."
