The Broome County Department of Parks, Recreation and Youth Services has closed the Dorchester Park Beach due to an algae bloom.

County officials made the decision July 21 as a protective measure.

Some algae blooms can use up oxygen in the water and produce toxins that can kill fish, causing health concerns especially if the water is ingested.

The public will be notified when the waterfront has been reopened.

Beaches at Nathaniel Cole Park and Greenwood Park remain open.
