Broome Expected to Cap County Gasoline Tax for Six Months
Broome County lawmakers are preparing to give drivers a temporary break on amount they pay in local gasoline taxes.
County Executive Jason Garnar and legislature chairman Daniel Reynolds on Wednesday announced the plan to suspend part of the county's gas tax.
A gas tax suspension measure is on the agenda for Thursday afternoon's meeting of the county legislature.
If the measure is approved, the county gas tax would be capped at $3 per gallon from June 1 through December 1.
New York lawmakers already have approved suspending the state gas tax for six months. That legislation gives counties the option of temporarily dropping their local gas tax or capping the tax at a certain amount.
Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program two weeks ago, Garnar said suspending or adjusting the Broome County tax on gasoline was "certainly something that we're open to."
At that time, Nassau and Suffolk counties on Long Island had acted to temporarily cap their local gasoline sales tax.
During the interview, Garnar said he wanted to make sure "that the savings get passed on at the pump." A news release on the proposed gas tax suspension did not indicate what steps will be taken to guarantee that the tax break will actually be reflected in retail prices.
