Anthony Brindisi hopes he won't face retribution for not supporting Nancy Pelosi to be the next speaker of the House.

The Democrat who defeated Republican incumbent Rep. Claudia Tenney in New York's 22nd Congressional District is making it clear he won't back Pelosi in a Wednesday caucus vote.

Brindisi Tuesday also said he won't support Pelosi in January's vote by the full House.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Brindisi said "I'd be lying if I said I didn't think there would be consequences." But he said "if there are consequences where I feel that I am being punished or the area I represent is being punished, I will be very vocal in my outcry over that."

Brindisi said he will honor the commitment he made repeatedly in the campaign not to support Pelosi to be speaker.

Brindisi said "a lot of pressure is being applied" to Democrats in the House, particularly new members, to support Pelosi.

Brindisi said he met with Pelosi earlier this month to let her know his thoughts on the matter. He described it as "a very cordial conversation."

Other House members have contacted Brindisi asking him to support Pelosi but, he said, he's told them that "I'm going to stick with my commitment."

Brindisi said if he feels he's being punished for not supporting the Democratic leadership, "I'll be on every news outlet I can find speaking out against that because that's what I think the American people are sick and tired of, is this Washington insider nonsense."
