A vehicle smashed into a utility pole, knocking out electric service to dozens of homes in a neighborhood on the West Side of Binghamton.

The crash at the intersection of Helen and Leroy streets was reported around 12:45 a.m. Tuesday.

According to NYSEG, 31 customers on Helen Street, Leroy Street and Westland Court were without power following the crash.

The name of the car driver was not released. It was not known whether she faced any charges because of the incident.

A utility crew removed the damaged pole and brought in a replacement pole. Workers were awaiting the arrival of city water department representatives to allow the repair project to be completed.
