The Broome County Health Department has advised Binghamton University officials that someone associated with the school has tested positive for COVID-19.

University President Harvey Stenger released a statement indicating the health department notification was received Monday morning.

The statement said the person who was diagnosed with coronavirus lives off campus. The person is in isolation and is receiving care.

Stenger said those who may have been in contact with the person will be notified of actions they should take to care for themselves.

The statement said "protecting the anonymity of the person is paramount." Stenger asked those who may be aware of the person's identity not to reveal the information so the patient "can focus on healing."

The president said university officials "knew sooner or later that a case would appear within our campus community."

Stenger said everyone affiliated with the university should adhere to the practice of social distancing to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
