All State University of New York campuses, including Binghamton University, are about to suspend in-person classes because of the coronavirus.

Governor Andrew Cuomo Wednesday announced the SUNY system will move to "distance learning" for the remainder of the spring semester starting March 19.

Binghamton University has been preparing for online instruction in recent days.

The governor revealed the decision regarding the state university system just after he said the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in New York had increased to 212. He said 121 cases have been identified in Westchester County.

Cuomo said SUNY officials are continuing to develop plans for the process of transitioning to online courses.

The governor said he didn't know what actions will be taken regarding sports teams.

With campuses closing for the rest of the semester, traditional graduation ceremonies likely will be affected.
