Five years after a failed effort to redevelop a downtown pedestrian mall, Binghamton officials are launching a new project.

A public "kick-off meeting" to discuss the future of a section of Washington Street north of Court Street will be held Thursday evening.

In 2014, the "Sidewalk of Stars" that had been a feature of the pedestrian mall near the MetroCenter was removed for a project that was to have included lighting improvements and nearly a dozen parking spaces.

The original plan supported by Mayor Richard David eventually was blocked by Democrats on city council who disagreed with the concept.

Now, project consultants plan to present "general concepts" and gather views from the public. The meeting will be held at the Southern Tier Incubator building at 120 Hawley Street at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Another public session on final design options is to be held later this year. Construction on the new project is expected to start next year.
