The board has decided Tonia Thompson is the best candidate for the top school district post.

Thompson has been serving as interim superintendent since last July. A search for a new superintendent started after the board dismissed Marion Martinez in March 2016.

In a statement released Thursday afternoon, the school board indicated the identification of Thompson as the "final candidate" represents a near-final step in the search process.

The school board utilized BOCES district superintendent Allen Buyck as a search consultant.

A pool of fifteen applicants eventually was narrowed down to Thompson as the final candidate.

With her selection as the finalist, Thompson and the Board of Education will begin contract negotiations.

Thompson has served in a range of roles during her three decades in education.
