Binghamton Residents Stunned As Car Hits Home

A vehicle jumped a curb and slammed into a house on a street being used as a detour around Binghamton's Front Street Gateway Project.

The car crashed into the structure at 37 Winding Way in the First Ward around 12:55 p.m. Tuesday.

Lavasia Reese, who has lived in the home for more than a decade, said she and her husband were shocked when the vehicle smashed into the porch.

No injuries were reported in the crash.

Reese said there usually isn't much traffic on Winding Way, a twisting link between Front and Oak streets. But that's all changed now that the street is being used as a detour for northbound traffic now that reconstruction work has started on Front Street.

Reese said she doesn't understand why city officials designated the street for the detour. She said it's resulting in "way too much traffic" on a street that's not designed to handle it.

Reese said she suspected the man who drove the car that crashed into her house was going too fast because he was unfamiliar with the street.
