A man who seriously injured his girlfriend during a fight on Binghamton's West Side has pleaded guilty to a felony assault charge.

46-year-old Shannon Callahan had been indicted on attempted murder and four other felony counts in connection with the May 22 incident.

In a deal with prosecutors, Callahan pleaded guilty to first-degree assault in exchange for a 12-year prison sentence.

Callahan admitted attacking the 35-year-old woman with a box cutter in a Chapin Street apartment.

Police had said Callahan's girlfriend was slashed several times in the throat before she was able to run to a neighboring apartment to seek help.

Investigators said Callahan had pinned the woman down and attacked her with the box cutter while telling her she was going to die.

Sentencing for Callahan has been scheduled for November 16.
