Detectives say a man faces charges in connection with the shooting of a South Side resident.

Authorities say 23-year-old Joseph Shindyakov of Binghamton is suspect in Saturday morning's attack on a man at a Tremont Avenue apartment house.

Shindyakov was found by investigators shortly after the shooting, which occurred at 51 Tremont Avenue shortly after 9 a.m.

Police say the man who was shot sustained a wound to his left thigh. He was able to walk from the two-family home to a stretcher. He was taken to a hospital by a Binghamton Fire Department ambulance, where he was treated and released.

Investigators say Shindyakov has been charged with second-degree assault and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He was arraigned in Binghamton City Court and sent to Broome County Jail.

People who were outside on Tremont Avenue Saturday morning told WNBF News they heard two men engaged in a loud dispute that lasted several minutes. Neighbors said one of the men drove away from the area after about 15 minutes but returned a short time later and shot the other person.

Although people who were nearby thought they heard as many as six gunshots, detectives say they believe "approximately 3 rounds" were fired at the man who was wounded.

Investigators did not provide a motive in the shooting.

Police say people with information about the shooting incident may contact the detective bureau at (607) 772-7080.

Investigators have not released any status reports about the April 21 fatal shooting of 12-year-old Aliza Spencer since the day after she was killed. Her funeral Mass was held at St. Paul's Church on Chenango Street on Monday morning.
