Binghamton Launches Certification Project for Floodwalls

The city of Binghamton has hired an engineering firm to review flood protection structures in an effort to obtain federal certification.

Mayor Richard David said Tetra Tech has been retained for the project that will include structural and technical evaluations of nearly seven miles of levees and floodwalls.

City council has approved spending about $183,000 for the first phase of the planned work.

If the flood protection structures meet levee requirements, the Federal Emergency Management Agency will provide its certification.

With certification, new flood insurance maps will identify levees and floodwalls that provide adequate protection.

Without federal certification, homeowners with mortgages could be required the obtain costly flood insurance.
