New York Attorney General Letitia James announced over $8 million in grants as part of phase two of the Cities for Responsible Investment and Strategic Enforcement or “Cities RISE” program to help with code enforcement and development to transform blighted areas.

Binghamton Mayor Richard David says the Parlor City is using data and other strategies to address eyesores, turning them into new housing and other opportunities in neighborhoods.  Binghamton's share of the allocation is $585,000.

Meanwhile, a recent study of housing issues in Broome County has found an alarming deficit of affordable housing for lower-income families while there is a glut of high-end luxury and student housing.

You can hear more about the Safe Housing Task Force study as co-chairs Rebecca Rathmell and Mark Schuster are the guests on Southern Tier Close Up January 18 after 2 p.m. following Binghamton University Basketball on News Radio 1290 WNBF.
