Sharkey's Bar and Grill is about to shut its doors, nearly 73 years after it opened for business in Binghamton's First Ward.

Co-owner Marie Sharak told WNBF News the place that's specialized in spiedies and other culinary treats is expected to close on November 29.

Sharak said she and her sister-in-law, JoAnn Sharak, decided on Sunday that now is the time to shut the place down. She said: "We're ready to retire."

Marie Sharak said: "It is very sad. But it is time." She said trying to maintain the business during the Covid-19 pandemic has been tough. Sharkey's has been open only four days a week recently.

Sharkey's grand opening at 56 Glenwood Avenue occurred on December 18, 1947. It was originally operated by Peter and Victoria Sharak.

Although the beloved restaurant and bar will no longer be operated by the family, Marie Sharak said there's good news for customers. She said: "It will be back!" She said people are interested in buying the business, including its recipes for spiedies, city chicken and pierogies.
