Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man who was discovered at a residence by city firefighters.

A fire was reported at a three-unit apartment building at 13 John Street around 4:30 p.m.

Initial reports indicated there had been a small blaze on the second floor of the woodframe structure.

Shortly after firefighters arrived, they reported finding an unresponsive man and called for an ambulance. Firefighters indicated the man may have sustained a gunshot wound.

Two units from Superior Ambulance were sent to the scene at the corner of John and Evans streets.

Police Chief Joseph Zikuski told WNBF News that the man had died. He said a gun apparently was not involved in the death, which he said may have been a suicide.

Detective Lieutenant Cory Minor Thursday evening said investigators were at the scene working to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
