Members of a Binghamton-based credit union will meet to decide the fate of a plan to merge with a central New York institution.

The Horizons Federal Credit Union board of directors has approved a plan to merge with Empower Federal Credit Union of Syracuse.

Horizons members are expected to vote on the proposal at a meeting in Binghamton next month.

The credit union's primary office is at 120 Main Street in Binghamton. It operates branches in Endwell and Vestal.

The directors of Horizons and Empower have concluded the merger would make possible enhanced products and services. The move also would reduce operating expenses.

It's not known what impact the merger would have on employment at the Broome County Horizons offices.

Empower has an office on Harry L. Drive in Johnson City, a short distance west of the Oakdale Mall.

The credit union presidents - Mario DiFulvio of Horizons and John Wakefield of Empower - did not return calls seeking comment on the merger plan.

The special meeting of Horizons members will be held in Binghamton on July 27.
