A man was hospitalized in critical condition after he was repeatedly stabbed in downtown Binghamton by a man wearing a Halloween-type mask.

Authorities say the 59-year-old man who was attacked early Monday morning behind the bus terminal at Chenango and Henry streets flagged down a police officer a few blocks away from the scene of the assault.

An ambulance was called to the area of Court and Washington streets at 1:48 a.m. to rush the seriously injured man to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City.

The man told police he had been sleeping on a bench behind the bus station across the street from the Centre Plaza office building when he was stabbed several times.

The masked assailant stabbed the man in the head, neck and face. The man also sustained a partially-severed finger and a heavy loss of blood in the unprovoked attack. Police say the assailant told the other man "to die."

Investigators described the injuries as "life-threatening." The man was reported in critical but stable condition in the hospital's intensive care unit.

Police officers followed a trail of blood from Court Street back to the bus station where they discovered the scene of the attack.

Investigators say they are pursuing a suspect but they have not released the name of the man they are seeking. He was described as a man in his 20s or 30s who was wearing a hooded sweatshirt.

Detectives would not say whether the weapon believed to have been used in the attack had been recovered.
