More people in the Greater Binghamton area are looking for housing.

A study of the housing inventory in Broome County has been released by the local economic development group, “The Agency” and the Greater Binghamton Chamber of Commerce showing a high demand for market rate rental properties outside of the large number of student housing slots around Binghamton.

The housing study also revealed a good number of homes in the area were built decades ago and many are in need of energy upgrades and general repairs.

Agency Community and Economic Development Deputy Director Stacey Duncan says availability of affordable housing for families, young professionals and older residents looking to downsize is important for the vitality of the community.

Duncan says property tax rates in the region also need a close look.
