BBB Warns Against Posting Your Senior Photo on Social Media
It's been circulating all over Facebook as the #SeniorPhotoChallenge. People are sharing their senior portraits as a way to show support to the class of 2020, who are missing out on their final weeks of school due to coronavirus.
While it seems like an heartfelt gesture, it could be a step towards hackers and scammers getting a hold of even more personal information.
The Better Business Bureau has issued a warning to everyone to be aware of what is being shared. The challenge asks you for the year you graduated as well as what high school you went to in addition to sharing the photo.
These are all common security questions that may help those hackers and scammers get into your private accounts. From there, all it takes is an internet search to reveal more information about you, such as family members, your real name, birthday or even where you live.
If your social media privacy settings aren’t high, you could be giving valuable information away for anyone to use.
This challenge is just one among the few that the BBB is warning against participating in. Also circulating on Facebook, all the cars you’ve owned (including makes/model years), favorite athletes, and top 10 favorite television shows.
By participating in these and sharing your answers, you could be sharing details surrounding commonly used passwords or security questions. If your social media privacy settings aren’t high, you could be giving valuable information away for anyone to use.
Tips to keep you safe on social media - from the BBB:
- Resist the temptation to play along. While it’s fun to see other’s posts, if you are uncomfortable participating, it is best to not do it.
- Review your security settings. Check your security settings on all social media platforms to see what you are sharing and with whom you are sharing.
- Change security questions/settings. If you are nervous about something you shared possibly opening you up to fraud, review and change your security settings for banking and other websites.
