For nearly a century, there's been a drug store at 34 Court Street in downtown Binghamton. But that's about to change.

Customers of the CVS Pharmacy near Boscov's department store are being told the business will be closing soon.

A CVS employee said the official closing date is scheduled to be November 29 but the store could be shut down two weeks sooner.

No signs were posted at the store about the imminent closing on Friday..

The building at 34 Court Street has been home to a drug store since September 1924. That's when Hamlin's Red Cross Drug Store moved in from a location just west of the site.

The drug store has been expanded and remodeled a few times over the past several decades. It became a CVS Pharmacy in 1975.

The store is popular with people who live and work downtown, including many Binghamton University students. It's the only pharmacy downtown.

Prescriptions on file at the Court Street location are expected to be transferred to the CVS store on West State Street on Binghamton's North Side.

CVS Pharmacy closed a store at 68 Main Street on the city's West Side in January 2019. That unit was located about a half-mile west of the Court Street store. The building remains vacant.

CVS owns the Court Street building. Representatives from the company's corporate headquarters in Rhode Island did not respond to a request for comment.
