Woman Shot While Sitting in Vehicle in Johnson City
Johnson City police say a woman was wounded when a gunman opened fire while she sat in a vehicle parked near the Goodwill Theatre.
The shooting happened on Willow Street just east of Lewis Street around 3:35 p.m. Sunday.
Police Chief Brent Dodge said the injured woman was taken to Wilson Medical Center, which is three blocks from the shooting scene. He said he believed her injuries were not life-threatening.
Dodge said one man had been taken into custody in connection with the incident. It wasn't known if he was the suspected shooter.
The police chief also said a gun had been recovered as part of the investigation.
Dodge said other people were in the vehicle at the time of the shooting but they escaped apparent injury.
Investigators searched for evidence in the area around the parked Saturn sport utility vehicle.
A section of Willow Street north of Corliss Avenue was closed after the shooting.
The incident happened less than 11 hours after a man was fatally wounded in a drive-by shooting on Main Street on Binghamton's West Side
Dodge said detectives would be working to determine whether the two shootings were related.
Johnson City police were assisted at the scene by Binghamton University police, Broome County sheriff's deputies and New York State Police troopers.
The shooting happened about two blocks from the new university Pharmacy School building, which opened last month.
