Marvel fans have waited three long years for Ant-Man sequel Ant-Man and the Wasp, but now that its release is finally upon them, they're already looking to its next chapter: Will there be an Ant-Man 3, and if so, when will it come out?

Though a third film has yet to get an official greenlight, cast and crew are hopeful the franchise will continue — so much so that director Peyton Reed has already begun to lay the foundation for the next movie.

"There are definitely things in [Ant-Man and the Wasp] that, if we're fortunate enough to make another one, there's a lot to play with," he told Comicbook.com in a recent interview. "We spend more time in the Quantum Realm in this movie, obviously, than the first movie but it feels like we're just dipping our toes into it."

He reiterated as much while speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, noting he thinks it will depend on the rest of the MCU features planned for this year.

"I don't know this, but I think any further announcement of the slate — the rest of this year is going to be about the next Avengers movie and the tee-up to that stuff," Reed said. "I think we are all interested in doing one. There is story to tell there. Definitely. There is story we've talked about, potentially. I'm very, very hopeful."

As far as when to expect its release (or even a confirmation, for that matter), fans may have a long road ahead of them. Marvel is skipping this year's Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con, where they've traditionally teased upcoming projects, and Kevin Feige specifically told ComicBook in a separate interview that their plan moving forward is "about making great film, as good a film as we can, one after another," adding that they're still figuring out "how to debut [those plans]" but will be "less cagey about it" after Avengers 4's release next spring.

That doesn't mean Reed and co. can't get working on a third film behind scenes, but if they stick to their timeline thus far, Ant-Man 3 is likely a few years away.

Ant-Man and the Wasp opens Friday (July 6). Avengers: Infinity War is now playing in theaters. Captain Marvel will follow in March 2019, and Avengers 4 in May 2019. Spider-Man: Far From Home is slated to debut on July 5, 2019.
