Health officials in Tioga County are urging families of young children to have their toddlers tested for lead exposure.

Officials say while New York State requires one and two year olds to be tested, 65% of 3 year olds in Tioga County have never been tested for lead, commonly found in paint in older homes.

Lead poisoning can lead to learning and physical disabilities in young children.

A number of programs and locations are available for parents to have their children tested.  More information can be found by contacting the Tioga County Health Department.

Lead mitigation assistance can be found through the Tioga County Health Neighborhoods program.
