Police say a girl was assaulted by three other young girls one block from Union-Endicott High School following an evening event.

Investigators say the attack occurred around 6:55 p.m. May 23 in the 1300 block of Riverview Drive in Endicott.

Authorities say the three suspects involved in the incident are girls ranging in age from 11 to 14. They are being charged with third-degree assault.

According to village police, the girl who was attacked was hurt. She did not require hospital treatment. No weapons were used in the incident, which happened on Riverview Drive just west of Garfield Avenue.

Investigators say the incident received "significant attention" on social media with some claiming it was part of a gang-initiation. It was alleged the girls had attacked several people and were "seeking out additional victims at random."

Police chief Patrick Garey said detectives checked out the rumors and found no evidence of any other similar incidents.

People with information about the assault may contact the Endicott police detective division at 607.785.3341.
